Billy The Bird - A Poem
The Creature
By: Callie Schultze When the full moon's out The creature will fly Keep a weather eye on the night sky. It soars above your head Then it's gone in a flash It must be an alien, or something like that It swoops and it swirls It grimaces and growls Just a glimpse of it will make you howl Seen one night a month No more and no less Its identity you'd never guess! Is it an alien or UFO? And eagle or a hawk? Some people say: “It's a bird!” or “It's a plane!” But No! It's Billy! So when the full moon is out Billy Bird will fly Keep a weather eye on the night sky. You might just see him, Just one quick glimpse. There has never been a boy Quite like this! |
Endnote -
The idea for the creation of this genre came from Dick King-Smith's book, Billy The Bird. I chose to take elements from the story and use them to create a poem because it is a really cute story and there is a mystery that plagues the town concerning a sighting of something that looks like a boy flying, but can't be because of the laws of gravity. I use to write lots of poems, but haven't written any in years so I thought it would be fun to jump back into the genre and write a free-verse poem about the amazing Billy Bird.
I know that there are many different forms for writing poems, but I chose a free-verse format because I felt this poem should be as unique and original as the boy whom it is about. This poem is suitable for an audience of all ages, but will be more enjoyed by those who have already read the book. The information included in this poem is taken from the book, Billy The Bird, and provides a brief overview of the plot of the story. It's about a boy who can mysteriously fly on nights of full moons and includes the reactions some of the town people have that have caught a glimpse of him during one of his flights.
I feel like a poem is a good way to portray Dick King-Smith's own creativity because my poem uses his own creative genius and imagination as the foundation and building blocks of my poem. My subject is not original, but the presentation of it is. Often the subject/basis of a poem is the hardest thing to come up with so most of my work was done for me because of King-Smith's creative work. My poem serves as just a gloss/overview of King-Smith's own imagination and creativity.
