Obituary January 4, 2011
Endnote –
While composing Dick King-Smith's obituary, I learned that there are many forms and styles for writing obituaries. Some are strictly informational and formal while others tend to be more formal and include more intimate details about the person's life and some of their personality traits. I took a more traditional approach to writing the obituary because Dick King-Smith was a famous author and I did not know him personally. I had to rely on secondary resources to obtain information about his life.
This genre is geared toward an older audience, someone who would be reading a newspaper or an online news media resource. The vast amount of information about King-Smith's background and life will be of more interest to an older audience; the information helps one to appreciate his choice of subjects and characters that he wrote about in his books.
I chose this genre form because Dick King-Smith died within the last few years and was a perfect way to discuss his life and achievements. It is shorter than a biography, but gives a brief overview of many different aspects of his life and career.
Typically obituaries tell about several aspects of a persons life ranging from work and education to family. I integrated my research into the obituary by retelling his life and accomplishments that I found into an obituary form. This seemed like a logical way to organize information about his life now that he is deceased.
I am happy with the way that my obituary turned out and satisfied with the amount of information about his works and life that I was able to include. It provides enough background of his life to show his vast array of life experiences and how those experiences influenced his books. It also includes information about his personal/family life that wouldn't otherwise be communicated by genres that focus only on his life as an author and his works.
